The neighbourhood policing team in Datchet, Horton and Wraysbury is warning people that the dangerous use of catapults will not be tolerated, following an increase of incidents involving the device

PC Donal Doyle, neighbourhood officer, said: “During the four-and-a-half years that I have been the local officer, I have see an increase in the use of catapults, which are being used to cause criminal damage, kill wildlife and even injure people.

“Catapults can be very dangerous weapons, and I cannot stress strongly enough that anyone found in possession of one without a lawful excuse will be arrested and put up infront of a magistrate.”

Between May and December 2009, there were at least four reports of people possessing catapults in the neighbourhood, including one report of a catapult being used to fire at birds.

In December 2009, 22-year-old David Robert Wilden of Douglas Lane, Wraysbury, was jailed for six years for assaulting a man during an incident of disorder at Wraysbury Village Club in March 2008, which involved the use of a catapult.

The neighbourhood policing team is appealing for more information from the public. PC Doyle added: “If you know of anyone carrying a catapult, or you see someone using one, please contact us immediately, or call Crimestoppers; your call will be treated as strictly confidential.”

PC Doyle and his colleagues in the neighbourhood policing team can be contacted via the 24-hour Police Enquiry Centre on 0845 8 505 505. If you don’t want to speak to police or leave your name, please call the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
